Work Credits and SSDI

Qualifying for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), depends not just on your medical eligibility. The Social Security Administration (SSA), also takes into account your work history and how many work credits you have earned throughout your career.

Anyone who’s worked in the US knows that part of their paycheck goes toward Social Security taxes. These tax payments accumulate in the form of “work credits,” which are tallied quarterly, depending on your income. That income threshold is reevaluated yearly as inflation and cost-of-living changes. Depending on your age, the number of credits you need for SSDI are variable. Typically, claimants need between 20 and 40 work credits. Younger workers may qualify with fewer credits.

Age at Disability Onset || Number of Work Credits Required:

Before 24-years-old || 6 credits

24 – 30-years-old || 4 to 10 credits

31 – 42-years-old || 20 credits

43 – 61-years-old || 20 to 40 credits

62 to full retirement age || 40 credits

A recent work history is also taken into account during SSDI eligibility reviews. Credits must have been earned within a certain period of time of a claimant’s disability onset in order to contribute to SSDI eligibility.

Age at the Onset of Disability || Work Credits Required and Time by Which Credits Were Earned

Before 24-years-old || 6 credits within the 3 years of onset age

24 – 30-years-old || 4 or more credits, 1 credit for each year between age 21 and the age of onset

31 – 42-years-old || 20 credits earned within the 10 years before disability onset

43 – 61-years-old || 20 to 40 credits, 1 credit per year between age 21 and the onset of disability, plus at least 20 countable credits must additionally have accumulated in the 10 years just prior to disability

62 to full retirement age || 40 credits in total, with at least 20 earned in the 10 years just prior to disability

I literally got my SSDI approved in 7 months. If I didn’t have Molly for my attorney I’m not sure how long it would have taken. She went above and beyond, she was patient with me and answered all my questions (even on the weekends!) if you’re looking for an attorney that will get your SSDI approved in a timely manner, she’s who you want representing you. I would give her more than 5 stars if I could!
Response from the owner:Thank you, Lisa! I am so glad we got a good result!

Molly Burke is an amazing Lawyer. I had fought my Social Security Disability case alone for yrs without a lawyer after I was wrongfully dropped from SS in 2017. I reached out on NOLO on Google expecting to not hear anything from any lawyers because of the reason I was being denied. Molly reached out to me and said she had fought other cases that were getting denied for the same reasons as me and said she'd love to help me. Molly always responded to my emails or texts immediately no matter when I reached out. She was there for me after my case was approved and fighting for my back pay that I still hadn't received 9 months after I won. I have never had someone fight for me or treat me like Molly has, so warm, caring and very professional. I seriously can't say enough good things about Molly, and have told her numerous times she truly is an angel and my whole family is forever greatfull that she decided to take on my case. I don't think 5 stars are enough for her and if I could give her more stars I would, but since I can't I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND MOLLY to everyone. I have actually already gave 2 people her name and number to reach out to her. Again, if you want someone to care about you and your case Molly is that Lawyer. My family can't thank her enough, but I will tell anyone who asks who I had as a lawyer I won't hesitate to recommend Molly. Thank you again Molly for helping me throughout my case and after my case. I will forever be in debt to you. If you want someone who will fight tooth and nail for you and your case call Molly, she's AMAZING.
Response from the owner:Thank you, Kristen! I'm so glad that we could get you some relief!
